Monarch Butterflies are Back!

Monarch Butterflies are Back!

We have some really good news about the Monarch Butterflies, they are making a comeback! According to the latest 2025 monitoring reports from Michoacán, Mexico, Monarch populations have doubled!  The decline of Monarchs in Montana (and more broadly) is strongly tied to loss of milkweed habitat, so plant native milkweed in your gardens and encourage its growth.

Stories about the Monarch include:

    1. In Mexico, monarch butterflies arrive during late October/November, coinciding with Day of the Dead. They are believed to bring back the souls of ancestors returning to visit.
    2. Many cultures see butterflies as messengers from the spirit world, or symbols of reincarnation, transformation.
    3. Monarchs are Icons of Hope and Perseverance

BUT, the Monarch Butterfly is still fragile and needs help to come back even stronger.  PLANT NATIVE MILKWEED (asclepius syriaca) RIGHT NOW!  Late summer and fall is a good time for colder climates.  Read more about how and when to plant.  www.americanmeadows.com

Jennie Montana created a Montana Monarch Butterfly Bison Trimmed Cape in honor of this tenacious, resilient, and inspiring creature.
